February 7:  Bonsai Open house.  9:00-12:00, 1:00-4:00, at Leisure Hall in Farragut, Iowa.

February 17:  IBA Meeting.  Topic: Twisted shimpaku.  Presenters:  Ron Heinen and Ed 
Poggensee
What should I do with my shipaku from Ed's (trwisted shimpaku) and Michael Hegedorn's
(twisted shimpaku) workshops?  Bring your shimpakus to work on.  If you do not have a 
shimpaku, bring any needle juniper to work on.

March 17:  IBA Meeting.  Topic:  Collecting bonsai.  Presenter:  Bill Todd
Tips on how to collect trees from the wild will be discussed.  Where and what to collect, as well
as tools needed to do the job right will be discussed.  Possible sites and collecting opportunities
would be very welcome.
Tree of the month:  Azalea.  Presenter:  Angie Allison

April 21:  IBA Meeting - Topic: Work on Botanical Center trees. - Meet in the work room and be
prepared to work on your adopted trees.  If you do not have a tree, this is your opportunity to
work with other members who have experience with quality specimens.

May 19:  IBA Meeting.  Topic:  Pots and pot selection.  Presenter:  Larry Totton
Choosing the right pot for the right tree will be discussed.  Everything you ever wanted to know
about pots and pot selection but were afraid to ask will be discussed.  Bring your own odd or
old and antique pots for show and tell.

June 16:  IBA Meeting.  Topic:  Repotting tropicals.
Bring your own tropicals to repot.  If you need supplies, David will have what you need for
purchase.  This is a great time to start repotting your tropicals.  Angie Allison and Ron Heinen
will be repotting a large Botanical Center ficus.  Meet in the work room.

July 1:  Entry deadline, IOWA STATE FAIR BONSAI SHOW

July 21:  IBA Meeting.  Topic:  Show preparation and Judging bonsai.  Presenters:  Alan
Magruder & Lee Slorah
Tips on preparing for the Iowa State Fair exhibition will be shared.  This will be a brief topic with
handouts.  Lee Slorah will share details of this hear's Fair (who, what, and how trees will be
judged).
Topic:  Accent Plants Workshop.  Presenter: Ivan Hanthorn

August 16:  IOWA STATE FAIR BONSAI SHOW.   Agriculture Bldg., Iowa State Fairgrounds,
Des Moines, Iowa.

August 18:  IBA Meeting.  Topic:  Styling Workshop.  Presenter:  David Lowman
David will conduct a mini workshop on styling and potting a schefflera.  Trees and supplies
may be purchased from David, or you may bring your own schefflera or other tropical.  Leave
with a great little tree.  Meet in the work room.

September 15:  IBA Meeting.  Topic: Inspirational trees in nature.  Presenter:  David Richmond
David will share tips and a handout on winterizing temperate zone trees and bonsai trees in
general.  Max will talk about getting your trees prepared for winter, disease, and insects to be
aware of and prepare for.  He will focus on winterizing tropicals in Iowa.

October 10-11:  FALL BONSAI SHOW.  Reiman Gardens, Ames, Iowa.

October 20:  IBA Meeting.  Topic:  Major branch bending techniques.  Presenter:  Ron Heinen
Ron will briefly share some techniques for bending large branches.
Topic:  Shohin bonsai.  Presenter: Helene Magruder
Helene will share her expertise about shohin bonsai.  Learn how to select, prune, care for, and
show your shohin.

November 17:  IBA Meeting.  Topic: 2009 wrap-up
We will have our annual potluck dinner.  A slide show/video will be prepared to highlight
meetings and workshops.  Annual awards for 2009 and nominations of new board
members for 2010.
